1904
The Crystal City Gas Company is formed and incorporated on August 30. Crystal City became a part of the Pennsylvania Gas and Electric Corp. (PG&E), a holding company with a number of subsidiaries.
1927
Crystal City is sold to the Stevens and Wood Co. of New York City. Shortly thereafter, 49% of it was purchased by the E. L. Phillips Co. In a rather unique form of ownership, the company was managed alternately by each of these groups for three-year periods.
1953
PG&E divested itself of its New York affiliates under the terms of the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 . An investor group from Boston took control, and new management was appointed. Two companies are formed: Corning Natural Gas Corporation and its subsidiary Corning Natural Gas Appliance Corporation.
1954
The company's 50-year anniversary starts a period of important growth. Pipeline capacity was doubled, several small gas companies such as Addison and Southport were acquired, and the office building occupied on Denison Parkway was completed. The company became very aggressive in adding new customers and increasing its load.
1960
Began serving Corning Community College and Sullivan Science Center with natural gas
1961
Acquired Southport Gas Company in Pine City and its 410 customers
1965
The appliance company promoted barbeque grills and gas lights through the gas light carousel truck that would drive around town.
1971
Converted two trucks to run on compressed natural gas in cooperation with Ingersoll Rand Company. On October 26, the New York State Public Service Commission ordered no new attachment of gas customers and no increased usage by existing customers. One and two-family homes were required to install dual-fuel appliances.
1972
On June 23, Tropical Storm Agnes caused the gas company to lose all but 2,000 customers. With the help of several other utilities, we were able to restore gas service to all customers by mid-September.
1974
Extended gas to a new industrial park in Erwin and an addition to the CGW Erwin Plant. In a New York State Public Service Commission survey, Corning Natural Gas had the lowest rates of any New York State utility.
1975
Purchased a three-story and a one-story building adjacent to the Denison Parkway office and remodeled the one-story building to provide additional office space.
1978
It is the 75th anniversary of Corning Natural Gas Corporation. The Public Service Commission lifted restrictions against adding new gas customers.
1979
Began serving the Corning Museum of Glass
1981
The system was expanded to serve Pollio Dairy and the Campbell area, and was soon extended into the Village of Savona.
1982
The company acquires the Southern Tier Gas Corporation and its transmission pipeline running from Woodhull to the village of Bath municipal system.
1987
The company starts transporting gas supply for large volume customers like Corning Inc.
1988
The company constructed its new operations and warehouse facility on W. William Street, moving from the former Townley Avenue site.
1991
Constructed and moved into the new office facilities located on W. William Street, selling the Denison Pkwy property to the United Way. Corning Natural Gas was providing natural gas service to 13,000 customers in a service area which encompassed 396 square miles in Steuben County and a portion of Chemung County. The company is also transporting gas wholesale through its transmission pipelines to New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) and Bath Electric, Gas and Water Systems (BEGWS).
1993
The company begins purchasing customers gas supply and managing its capacity assets internally as a result of FERC order 636.
1995
The Finger Lakes Gas Company, serving the Village of Hammondsport, was purchased in bankruptcy.
1998
Corning Natural Gas Appliance Corp. purchased the Foodmart Plaza complex Tax Center International, Prudential market Place Real Estate and Ambrose and Shoemaker Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. The real estate companies were combined, doing business as Prudential Ambrose and Shoemaker Real Estate.
2001
Corning Natural Gas Corporation completes its first interconnect to local gas wells since the mid-nineteen seventies. Connections to local production wells will continue for the next decade.
2004
Corning Natural Gas Corporation sells its appliance company assets.
2006
Michael I. German takes over as the new CEO of Corning Natural Gas Corporation.
2009
The company receives permission from FERC to cross in Pennsylvania to directly connect to abundant Marcellus natural gas production. CNGC begins serving the town of Virgil, including Hope Lake Lodge and Greek Peek on October 19, 2009 in Cortland County.
2010
In November, Corning Natural Gas Corporation enters into a 50% Joint Venture with Mirabito Regulated Industries, Inc. to form Leatherstocking Gas Company (LGC) to provide gas service to both New York and Pennsylvania. LGC is the first new, natural gas utility in Pennsylvania in 40 years.
2011
Corning Natural Gas Corporation contracts with Talisman to build a compressor station in Caton. Maxwell Compressor Station goes online in May of 2011 with 5 compressors on site.
2013
The business establishes a publicly traded parent company, Corning Natural Gas Holding Corporation (CNGHC or holding company). The stock is traded on NASDAQ's Over the Counter (OTC) market under the ticker CNIG. The parent has Corning Natural Gas Corporation, and Leatherstocking Gas Company (50%).
2016
On August 31, 2016, CNGHC purchases Pike County Light & Power (PCLP) from Orange & Rockland, a subsidiary of Con Edison. PCLP is the first electric and gas utility under the ownership of CNGHC. Pike serves about 4600 electric customers and about 1200 gas customers in the Poconos.
2020
On July 1, 2020, the holding company purchases the other 50% of Leatherstocking Gas and Leatherstocking Pipeline Pennsylvania assets from Mirabito Regulated Industries, Inc. The Leatherstocking New York assets will be held in an 50% partnership between the same the two companies. Corning Natural Gas serves ~15,000 customers in Steuben, Chemung, and Cortland Counties, transports about 8 Bcf of gas annually, in 425 miles of pipe.
